Women's Track and Field In Fifth Place After First Day Of Horizon League Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. - University of Illinois at Chicago senior distance specialist Jenni Goebel captured the 10,000-meter run title with a time of 36:24.71 to pace the women's track and field squad to a fifth-place mark in the opening day of competition at the 2005 Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, at IUPUI's Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Detroit is leading the pack with 59 points, followed by UW-Milwaukee (50), Youngstown State (36), Butler (18), UIC (12), Wright State (9) and Loyola (2). Junior sprinter Jessica Fouche was equally as impressive as the defending 200-meter and 400-meter dash champion advanced to the finals in each event. Fouche won the 400-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 56.86 and earned a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.67. Freshman pole-vaulter Kristina Finley rounded out the point-getters for UIC on Thursday, with a fifth-place and school-record finish of 3.05. Teammate Candace Jackson set the previous record of 2.895 meters last season. The final day of championship competition will begin at 4:00 PM on Friday afternoon at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
