Men's And Women's Track And Field Teams Place Sixth At Horizon League Indoor Championships
Feb. 25, 2002
Greencastle, Indiana - University of Illinois at Chicago track and field coach Jim Knoedel couldn't help but be disappointed with his team's performance at the 2002 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field championships this past weekend. The women's team placed sixth out of seven teams with a score of 29 points, while the men's team finished last with a score of 18 points. Knoedel, however, was pleased with his squad's overall performance throughout the indoor season, as several school records were broken during the 2002 campaign. Two more marks were shattered as senior sprinter Monieka Thompson captured the 400-meter dash title with a time of 57.75. Thompson set the previous record in 2000 with a time of 57.90. Thompson also added a second-place finish of 2:13.48 in the 800-meter run. On the men's side, the Distance Medley Relay team of Joe Marren, Tristan Roche, Danny Smith and Rich Daubert set the school record with a third-place time of 10:14.98. The previous record of 10:16.7 was set in 1979. "It's been a real good indoor season in all of the events," Knoedel said. "There has been a lot of personal records for most of the athletes." Detroit captured the women's title with 122 points, while Youngstown State finished in second with 117 points, followed by UW-Milwaukee (106), Loyola (94), Butler (49), UIC (29) and Wright State (8). Butler took home the men's title with 131 points, followed by UW-Milwaukee (116), Detroit (96), Youngstown State (86), Loyola (71) and UIC (18).
Junior Amy Fehrman also medaled for the Flames as she tied for third in the long jump with a season-high leap of 5-feet, 2 ¼ inches.
Senior Joe Kepinski took home a runner-up performance in the pole vault with a career-indoor high of 13-feet, 6 ¼ inches. "There were a few good individual performances (this weekend)," Knoedel said. "As a team, we have a lot of hard work ahead." UIC will be back in action on Saturday as they will travel to Notre Dame to participate in the Alex Wilson Invitational that will begin at 11:00 AM. |
