Track And Field Keeps Rolling Along At Cannon IV Classic
Feb. 11, 2002
Indianapolis, Ind. - When a team competes against top competition, it typically brings out the best in them. Such was the case on Saturday as the University of Illinois at Chicago men and women's track and field teams as they participated in the highly prestigious Cannon IV Classic as two school records were shattered by UIC athletes. Junior Joe Marren broke Devin Johnson's two-year old mark of 4:14.17 in the 1-mile run by two seconds as he placed 13th overall with a time of 4:12.28. Marren's classmate Rich Daubert also nearly eclipsed Johnson's mark with a time of 4:14.74. "Joe just crushed Devin Johnson's old mark," UIC track and field coach Jim Knoedel said. "He beat it by two seconds, which is just a huge improvement." Sophomore Jenni Goebel destroyed Vicki Sherbrook's record of 10:40.69 in the 3,000-meter run as she beat it by over 20 seconds with a time of 10:16.98. "All in all, it was a great weekend," Knoedel said. "There were some key improvements. "If we continue on this track, it should be exciting to see what we can do at the conference championships."
UIC will be back in action on Friday night, as they will travel north to participate in the UW-Milwaukee Quadrangular at 4:00 PM.
