Women's Tennis Gives Back With `Girls In The Game' Oct. 18, 2007
Chicago, Ill. - The UIC women's tennis team has been taking some time away from Flames Courts this fall to volunteer with a program whose mission is to educate and provide healthier lifestyle choices to young girls in the Chicagoland area. Girls in the Game is focused on giving underprivileged girls "the chance to participate in and receive the benefits associated with sports and fitness opportunities", according to the organization's website. Throughout September and October, the women's tennis team will be working with girls aged 7-12 to assist with homework, creative projects, and to participate in sporting activities. UIC women's head coach Shannon Tully is pleased with her team's response to the community service. "I think this has been a very positive experience," said Tully. "Especially because of the relationships my team has been able to form with the girls." "I have been excited to see how involved my players are with teaching and mentoring," Tully added. "I feel that it gives them the opportunity to understand that each person learns differently, reacts differently, and that sometimes you just need to figure out the best way to communicate, something I do daily as a coach to my players." While tennis is a featured after-school activity during the spring session, team members like that they have become involved with a program that is not completely focused on their sport. "A little variety is nice sometimes," Tully said. "It has been a nice change to get involved in a program that isn't just about tennis." This is the first year that the women's tennis team has worked with Girls in the Game, and Tully says that she "would be happy to bring the team back again" in the future. The UIC women's tennis team wraps up its fall season in Denton, Texas at the North Texas Invitational November 2-4th.
