CHICAGO – The UIC women's tennis team will bring its fall schedule to a close this weekend when it heads to Rockford, Ill., to compete in the ITA Second Chance Regional, hosted by Northern Illinois. Competition gets underway Friday at 9 a.m. CT at Boylan Tennis Center and concludes on Sunday.
The Flames are back on the courts after seniors Kathryn Sharples and Jana Knoppe and freshman Veronica Lacerda competed at Northwestern’s Wildcat Invitational Oct. 4-6. The trio combined for three singles wins and went 1-1 in doubles.
Sharples was undefeated in her field after taking two wins in singles against opponents from Kentucky and Wisconsin, followed by a 1-2 performance by Knoppe, while Lacerda was unable to come up with a win in her two matches.
In doubles, Sharples and Knoppe combined to split their pair of matches. The duo dropped a 6-1 decision to Princeton’s Katie Goepel and Emily Hahn, while they came back against NC State’s Christy Sipes and Taylor Zaytoun to earn a 6-4 defeat.
In addition to Sharples, Knoppe and Lacerda, senior Mariana Palacios and sophomore Ann-Sophie Hahn also competed during the fall season and contributed toward the Flames 11 wins in singles and five wins in doubles.
Over the course of the three-day competition, UIC will be competing alongside student-athletes from Chicago State, Marquette, Milwaukee, Illinois State, Wisconsin, Green Bay and host Northern Illinois. In all, 32 players will be representing their respective institutions.
