CHICAGO – The UIC women's tennis team prepares to face off against opponents from Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, Princeton, NC State and DePaul at the Wildcat Invitational this weekend in Evanston, Ill.  Competition begins Friday and runs through Sunday.

The Flames are entering competition after competing at the Spartan Invitational, Sept. 27-29, in East Lansing, Mich.  With seniors Mariana Palacios and Kathryn Sharples, sophomore Ann-Sophie Hahn and freshman Veronica Lacerda competing, the Flames combined for a total of 12 doubles and singles wins.

Hahn led UIC after going 3-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles.  Hahn was paired with Palacios and the duo took their first two matches to advance to the Draw C championship match, where they suffered a 9-8 (9) loss to Toledo’s Chrissy Coffman and Mackenzie Bowman.  Hahn later dropped her first singles match in the Draw B bracket before going on in the consolation to defeat all of her opponents and win the west title.

Sharples and Lacerda additionally competed in doubles, in the Draw C bracket, where the pair collected wins in their first two matches and were positioned in the title match, but ultimately fell, 8-5, to Cleveland State’s Alex Bush and Ellen Folkers.

In Draw A singles, Palacios each dropped two matches in the main bracket, but went on in the consolation to take two wins apiece.  While in Draw C, Lacerda went 1-1 after dropping her first match and collecting a three-set win in the second match to Michigan State's Hilary Hager, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The Flames will be faced with tough competition this weekend, as 12 competitors from the 11 schools to be represented were listed in the ITA preseason singles rankings and four doubles pairings from Illinois, Kentucky and Virginia were ranked in doubles.

Matches are scheduled to take place outdoors at Vandy Christie Tennis Center, weather permitting, or indoors at Combe Tennis Center.
