Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season At Bronco Invitational
Sept. 17, 2004
Kalamazoo, Mich.- The fine-tuning for another conference title defense begins today for the defending eight-time Horizon League champion University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team, as the Flames are in Kalamazoo, Mich., to participate in the Bronco Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University.
The Bronco Invitational will be the first tournament of the fall for the Flames as they prepare for dual match play in the spring.
The team received a nice dose of news just before they left for the tournament when they learned that No. 1 singles player Beatriz Cabrera (Malaga, Spain/VCU) ranked 92nd in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division I Preseason Singles Rankings released this week.
Cabrera posted an 18-2 singles record last season, earning Horizon League Player of the Year and All-Horizon League First Team honors. The junior, entering her second season with the Flames, also made history as the first UIC tennis player in history to earn an ITA singles ranking in May, earning recognition at No. 104.
Last season Cabrera finished the campaign ranked tenth in the Midwest Region.
UIC Head Coach Shannon Tully will welcome back All-Horizon Leaguers Corey Steven and Iris Jaklin this season, plus outstanding contributors Molly Smith, Melanie Humphrey and Christina Oum return to help the Flames complete their drive for the team's ninth straight league title.
