Flames Flashback: Women's Tennis Wins 14th Straight Horizon League Championship

As the 2010-2011 academic year approaches UIC takes a look back at the previous year in athletics. CHICAGO - The UIC women's tennis dynasty extended their Horizon League Championship winning streak to 14 in 2010. The Flames remained undefeated in league play extending their winning streak against conference opponents to 123 straight matches. The Flames went 20-4, the best record in UIC's Division I history, topping the 1985 record of 20-6, earning their 12th consecutive NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship berth. UIC ended their 2010 campaign winning 17 of its last 19 matches. The Flames finished the year ranked ninth in the Women's Midwest DI Rankings administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. That is the highest ranking ever achieved by the program. UIC was led by two-time Horizon League Player of the Year Mariya Kovaleva. Kovaleva finished the year with an unblemished record in conference play (10-0) earning Horizon League Player of the Year and First Team honors. She finished the 2010 campaign with 25 singles victories ranking third most in single-season history. Kovaleva also earned U.S. Army Horizon League Female Scholar Athlete of the Month of April. Elena Antakova and Ilinca Cristescu also earned All-Horizon League honors, as well as a national ranking of 49th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in doubles play. Antakova, Cristescu and Kovaleva all earned Horizon League Player of the Week honors, with Kovaleva earning the weekly honor on three occasions. The Flames open on up there 2010 season at the Northern Illinois Invitational on Sept. 10-11.
