    June 24, 2011

CHICAGO - Following a record setting semester in the classroom, UIC student-athletes continued to pile up the accolades on Friday when 60 Flames from 12 different sports were named to the 2011 Spring Horizon League Academic Honor Roll.

"Our student-athletes have put in a tremendous amount of hard work and effort in the classroom this year and we're thrilled to see some many talented young men and women recognized," said UIC Director of Athletics Jim Schmidt. "We are proud of their unprecedented achievements and we look forward to more great feats in the future.

"I would also like to thank our coaches, academic staff and support units throughout campus who have all made great sacrifices to help us achieve this measure of success," said Schmidt.

The women's swimming and diving team had a program-best 12 student-athletes honored with 12 followed by men's tennis with nine and men's and women's cross country and track and field with seven apiece. Softball and women's tennis each placed six on the honor roll, while soccer boasts four honorees and volleyball with three. Baseball and women's basketball each had two honorees, while men's basketball and men's swimming each have one.

During the Spring 2011 semester, UIC student-athletes boasted a 3.06 GPA, the highest mark in the department's history. Nine of the 17 teams achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; individually, 132 student-athletes, or 40 percent, earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Finally, a total of 28 student-athletes achieved a 4.0 GPA this spring.

Candidates for the Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale).
