Women's Tennis Cards Top-10 Regional Ranking
June 15, 2012
CHICAGO - The UIC women's tennis team, which captured its 16th-consecutive Horizon League Championship last season, finished the campaign with a No. 9 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Midwest Region. Eight of the top-10 regionally ranked teams were from BCS Conferences. Head coach Shannon Tully's Flames represented the Horizon League in the NCAA Tournament, UIC's 14th-straight postseason appearance. The Flames have won 143-consecutive matches versus conference foes, the longest streak in NCAA Tennis history (men's or women's), and Tully is 110-0 versus Horizon League opponents in her tenure as UIC's mentor. UIC played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the Midwest Region last season, taking on four teams that finished in the top-10. The Flames defeated Akron (4-3), which finished eighth in the Midwest Region, in the non-conference finale. UIC entered the NCAA Tournament on a 16-match winning streak, the longest stretch in school history. Senior Mariya Kovaleva became the Horizon League's first-ever four-time Player of the Year in 2012, while Teona Tsertsvadze, Haley Craig and Elisa Simonetti were also named All-Horizon League.
