INDIANAPOLIS - Junior Jana Knoppe, who helped lead the UIC women's tennis team to its 17th-consecutive Horizon League Championship last month, has been named the League's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the month of April. It marks the second-straight month that a UIC female student-athlete has collected the honor.

Based on nominations from the League's sports information directors, the award is voted on by Faculty Athletic Representatives from the conference's member institutions.

"Jana was a huge part of our success this season," said head coach Shannon Tully. "She went undefeated during conference play and got some big wins when we needed them. Her work ethic on and off the court and her dedication to her studies makes her a model student athlete. It's a pleasure to coach her."

In the Flames' 4-3 win over Youngstown State in the Horizon League Championship match, Knoppe won in straight-sets at the No. 4 position, capping off a perfect month in which the German native went 5-0 in singles play, all against Horizon League opponents. In the regular season win over YSU on April 12, Knoppe's win in singles play was the deciding point that helped the Flames secure the regular season title.

Off the court, Knoppe majors in Civil Engineering and carries a 3.55 cumulative grade-point-average. She helped the women's tennis team win the GPA Award at UIC's annual Night of Champions event. The team holds a collective 3.45 GPA.

UIC swept the Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards during the month of March, with pitcher Joey Begel capturing the honor on the men's side, and softball's Kara Komp collecting the plaudit on the women's side.
