Chicago, Ill. - In this, its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, the University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team is looking for a bit more this time around. The Flames will take on the tournament's 16th seed, Northwestern, at 2:00 PM on Saturday in Evanston on the Wildcats' home courts at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center. In Saturday's first match, Wisconsin will take on Notre Dame at 10:00 AM. Last year, Northwestern blanked the Flames in a quick match, 4-0. UIC is looking to make the 2002 tourney more successful and compete better against the nation's 15th-ranked squad. Horizon League Player of the Year Nicole Derouin leads the Flames into action with a 22-9 singles record in the No.1 slot against the Big Ten champs. Fellow all-league performers Ayca Gumuscu, Britta Dohmann-who was named the league's newcomer of the year-and Karen Liwanpo will also be called upon for big matches. The forecast is calling for poor weather conditions, in which case competition will be moved indoors to the Combe Tennis Center on the NU campus. All matches will be played at their slated times.
Check out the latest edition of match notes to prep you for all of Saturday's tennis action.
