Mariya Kovaleva Named Horizon League Player Of The Year

INDIANAPOLIS - UIC freshman women's tennis standout Mariya Kovaleva was named the 2009 Horizon League Player of the Year, as well as the Newcomer of the Year, highlighting the top-seeded Flames' haul of postseason league awards that were unveiled at the championship banquet on Friday night. Kovaleva joins teammates Ilinca Cristescu and Kristen McPhillips on the All-League First Team, while junior Elena Antakova was named to the All-League Second Team. The Almaty, Kazakhstan native was undefeated in league play in singles, going 7-0 at the No. 1 position, while going 7-1 in doubles with McPhillips. The pair of awards marks the second year in a row the Flames earned both honors, with Cristescu earning the accolades in 2008. Cristescu and McPhillips were both named to the first team for the second-straight season, both going undefeated for the second year in singles, with Cristescu remaining undefeated in doubles as well. In her first season with the Flames, Antakova posted a 7-1 record in singles, mainly at the fourth position. Paired with Cristescu, the duo were undefeated at the No. 2 doubles position in league play. Head coach Shannon Tully was honored by her peers with the Coach of the Year honor for the fifth straight season, earning the award for the sixth time in her career.
