Teona Tsertsvadze Named Horizon League Player of the Week

CHICAGO- The UIC women’s tennis team junior Teona Tsertsvadze was named Horizon League Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 17, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The Tbilisi, Georgia native recorded a 6-0 mark over three Horizon League opponents on the road versus Valparaiso (Monday), Wright State (Saturday), and Butler (Sunday).
In doubles play against host Valparaiso, Tsertsvadze paired up with fellow junior teammate Elisa Simonetti as the duo defeated VU’s Kristin Zakiewicz and Katie Bilyeu with ease, 8-1. The next two matches versus WSU and Butler, Tsertsvadze paired up with junior Ilinca Cristescu at the No. 2 spot. The dominating pair cruised in a victory over WSU’s Kayla Tuscany and Taylor Hines, 8-2. The next day, Tsertsvadze and Cristescu defeated BU’s Gabriella Bobrowski and Brittany Farmer in a fierce battle, 8-7 (4).
Tsertsvadze secured all three wins over the week in singles play coming at the No. 2 slot for the Flames. She took the match to VU’s Brittany O’Reilly and shutting her out in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. In the match versus Wright State, Tsertsvadze recorded a victory over Masha Peresetsky in convincing fashion, 6-1, 6-2. The regular season finale versus Horizon League foe Butler, Tsertsvadze secured her sixth straight win over Caroline Hedrick in a three sets battle, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
This is the first time Tsertsvadze has received the award in her honor from transferring to UIC this year from the University of Oklahoma. Tsertsvadze has won her last nine out of 10 singles matches, and is currently tied second on the team for 15 overall singles wins.
Tsertsvadze and UIC finished the regular season Horizon League champions at a perfect 8-0 mark, and clinched the No. 1 seed going into the Horizon League Championships this week in Indianapolis at North Central High School. The Flames have a first round bye, and will play the winner of No. 4 Wright State or No. 5 Detroit on Friday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. CST.
