CHICAGO – UIC senior Teona Tsertsvadze was named Horizon League Athlete of the Week for April 9-15, the League office announced on Tuesday. This is the second time Tsertsvadze has received the honor this season, marking the fifth overall for UIC.
A native of Tbilisi, Georgia, Tsertsvadze went undefeated at singles and doubles this past Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15, in a pair of Horizon League matches against Cleveland State and Youngstown State at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Flames came out on top of the Vikings in a 5-2 decision, to become the lone team in the Horizon League to go undefeated against conference opponents, while they swept the Penguins, 7-0, for the fifth season in a row. The set of wins carried UIC’s Horizon League win streak to 139.
Pairing with Elisa Simonetti in doubles, Tsertsvadze and Simonetti took down Cleveland State’s duo of Alexandra Bush and Alex Power, 8-5, before moving on to overpower Youngstown State’s Lauren Hankle and Gimena Puppo, 8-1.
Tsertsvadze took her singles wins at the No. 2 position in straight-set matches. Facing the Vikings’ Maria Lazaris, Tsertsvadze came out on top in a 6-3, 6-3 final. In going up against the Penguins’ Hankle, she took the match 7-5, 6-4.
This week’s honor marks the third of Tsertsvadze’s career, after taking the accolade for the week of Feb. 27-March 4 earlier this season. She currently holds a 17-11 singles record, while going 12-4 when paired with Simonetti in doubles.
Tsertsvadze and the Flames return to action on Thursday, April 19, when they travel to face Milwaukee at 5 p.m. (CT) at Le Club Sports Club in Milwaukee, Wisc.
