CHICAGO – UIC senior Mariya Kovaleva was named Horizon League Tennis Athlete of the Week for March 26-April 1, the League office announced on Tuesday.  This is the second time Kovaleva has received the honor this season, while it marks the ninth of her career.

The Almaty, Kazakhstan, native went 1-0 in singles play and 1-0 in doubles this past Saturday, March 31, as the Flames (10-3/3-0 HL) defeated Green Bay, 6-1, on the road to capture their 136th consecutive Horizon League win.  Kovaleva went up at No. 1 singles with Jennifer Bradfield and came out on top of her opponent in a straight-set 6-0, 6-1 match to extend her singles win streak to six.  Combining with Haley Craig at No. 1 doubles, the duo took down Bradfield and Morgan Weuve by an 8-1 final and improved their season record to 16-9.

A three-time Horizon League Player of the Year, Kovaleva’s second accolade of the season marks the fourth for UIC, following Jana Knoppe and Teona Tsertsvadze.  As the winningest player in UIC history in singles and doubles, Kovaleva currently holds a career singles record of 87-29 (32-0 HL) and a doubles record of 89-37 (27-5 HL), while she is 13-11 (3-0 HL) in singles and 18-11 (2-1 HL) in doubles this season.

Kovaleva and the Flames return to action this Saturday, April 7, when they hit the road to face Detroit in Southfield, Mich., at the Franklin Athletic Club at 3 p.m. (CT).
