CHICAGO - UIC junior Mariana Palacios was named Horizon League Tennis Athlete of the Week for March 27 - April 2, the League office announced on Tuesday. The honor marks the first of the season for the Flames and the first of Palacios' career.
While she did not compete against Akron on Wednesday, March 27, the Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador, native was able to go 2-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles on Friday, March 29, as UIC defeated Milwaukee, 6-1, and Green Bay, 7-0, to extend its streak to 146-consecutive conference wins.
Against the Panthers, Palacios was joined by Haley Craig at No. 1 doubles to take down Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi, 8-5, before capturing a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Kelly Fritz.
Into the Flames' second match against the Phoenix, Palacios was back at No. 1 doubles with Craig and took an 8-2 win over Amanda Timm and Rebecca Nelson. Palacios then moved to the No. 1 singles position for the first time this season and came away with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Timm.
With the wins, Palacios improved to 7-5 in doubles when combined with Craig at No. 1 and advanced to 11-2 (3-0 HL) in singles, 4-1 at No. 2 and 1-0 at No. 1.
Palacios and the Flames are scheduled to compete in their final home match of the season Saturday, when they host Detroit at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts, weather permitting.
