CHICAGO –The UIC women’s tennis team faces its first dual match-up of the spring season, as they travel to Wisconsin to go head-to-head with the Badgers.  Play begins at 3:30 p.m. (CT) in Madison, Wis., at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Flames are coming off a weekend where they competed at the Northwestern Invitational against No. 12 Northwestern, No. 65 Louisiana State and DePaul.  While facing fierce competition, UIC was able to capture wins in both singles and doubles action through the help of Haley Craig, Elisa Simonetti and Teona Tsertsvadze.

In singles, Craig notched LSU’s Yvette Vlaar (6-4, 6-3) to mark the first victory of the three-day tournament, while she also won a 6-3, 6-3 decision against DePaul’s Carolin Neuman.  Simonetti and Tsertsvadze each took out their competitors from DePaul, with Simonetti defeating Gia McKnight (7-5, 6-3) and Tsertsvadze defeating Kelsey Lawson (6-3, 6-4).

In doubles play, Craig was joined by Mariya Kovaleva to claim their match, 9-8, against Rebeca Mitrea and Patricia Fargas of DePaul.  The tandem of Simonetti and Jana Knoppe controlled their match against Northwestern’s Nida Hamilton and Natalie Edell, winning 8-3.  Polina Guimaraes and Tsertsvadze pulled away with the last doubles victory in a 9-8 (3) decision against LSU’s Olivia Howlett and Vlaar.

Heading into Saturday’s meet, UIC holds an all-time, regular-season record of 1-3 against Wisconsin, following the Flames loss of 6-1 last year in Madison.
