Milwaukee, Wis. - Competing in their final event of the fall season, the UIC women's tennis team suffered its share of ups and downs over the weekend against a talented field at the 2000 Marquette Invitational.
With Michigan, Marquette, DePaul and Northern Illinois also competing, the Flames posted a 16-16 overall singles record in the tournament while finding most of their troubles on the doubles side where they finished 2-11 on the weekend.
In singles action, Zvjezdana Malesevic gave UIC its highest individual finish as she placed fourth in the Flight 2 bracket. Zvjezdana opened the tournament with back-to-back victories, defeating seeded Kris Tiedt of Northern Illinois 7-5, 6-0 and Anna Pavlovic of Marquette 6-3, 6-4. She then dropped a 1-6, 2-6 decision to the top-seeded player in the bracket, Alison Sinclair of Michigan, in the semifinals, before falling 1-6, 4-6 to third-seeded Karen Falduto of DePaul in the third-place match.
Senior Jacki Farr and sophomore Nicole Derouin teamed up for the first time this season and highlighted UIC's doubles play as they placed fourth in the Flight 1 bracket. The duo opened the event with an 8-6 triumph over the sisters Matko from DePaul, then advanced to the semifinals after Charron and Espinosa of Marquette dropped out of the competition. Michigan, once again, ruined a UIC team's run as the top-seeded tandem of Duprez and Tipirneni downed Farr and Derouin 6-8, before the Wolverines' team of Nolan and Plaushines took them out 8-4 in the third-place contest.
Michigan proved to be the Flames' nemesis all weekend as UIC went 0-12 in matches against the Wolverines.
With the fal campaign now complete, the Flames wil be back together on the court as a team on January 20, 2001 as they begin the spring season, and team competition, in Milwaukee, Wis., as they take on Marquette.
