Kalamazoo, Mich.- The UIC women's tennis team wrapped up the 2003 fall schedule on Saturday at the ITA Women's Tennis Midwest Regional Championships at Western Michigan University's West Hills Athletic Club. Sophomore Iris Jaklin was unable to fend off Xavier's Lauren Clary in the first round of the main draw, losing 6-3, 6-2 in elimination. Jaklin was unable to end her fall singles season on a high note, dropping a tough 6-1, 6-0, match to Katie McGaffigan of Wisconsin in the consolation singles bracket. Senior Ayca Gumuscu was unable to qualify for the main singles draw of the tournament, but the four-year veteran put on an excellent display of skill and fire in the qualifying bracket. Gumuscu won her first two matches before falling to Lindsay Risebrough of Minnesota in the qualifying finals, 6-3, 6-2, on Friday. Gumuscu finished 2-1 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles, while Jaklin comlpeted her weekend with an 0-2 singles record and 1-1 in doubles play.
The Flames return to action in spring 2004, beginning with a road meeting at Marquette on January 23rd at 4 p.m.
