Gumuscu's Ride At Regionals Ends|
Oct. 24, 2003
Kalamazoo, Mich.- Senior Ayca Gumuscu's solid start to the 2003 ITA Women's Tennis Midwest Regional Championships was abruptly ended on Friday after the eldest member of the UIC women's tennis team was downed by Minnesota's Lindsay Risebrough, 6-3, 6-2, at Western Michigan's West Hills Athletic Club.
Gumuscu faced Risebrough in the qualifying round finals for the right to move onto the main singles draw of the ITA Regionals. It was there that Risebrough ended Gumuscu's two-match singles winning streak at the event.
In other action at the ITA Regionals, Gumuscu joined teammate Iris Jaklin for the first round of main draw doubles play. The UIC duo was unable to fend off Michigan's tandem of Kim Plaushines and Debra Streifler, but the two Flames standouts were able to earn a consolation draw upset over the fifth-seeded pair of Elise Montrose and Ashley Morris of Bradley, 8-4.
Jaklin will begin play in the main draw singles round of 64 on Saturday, Oct. 25th, at 10:30 a.m.
