Kalamazoo, Mich.- Win or go home.

That's what faced senior Ayca Gumuscu at the 2003 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Qualifying Singles Draw on Thursday, and win she did.

Gumuscu, one of four 5-8 seeds, won both of her matches at Western Michigan University's West Athletic Club to move on to Friday's final qualifying round, where a win earns Gumuscu a spot in the main draw singles bracket.

Gumuscu defeated Ashley Morris of Bradley, 7-5, 6-0, in a first round matchup. In the second round, Gumuscu defeated Eastern Michigan senior Kendra Clark, 6-4, 6-2, for the right to face Minnesota's Lindsay Risebrough in the qualifying bracket finals.

Sophomore Iris Jaklin, the other UIC competitor at the ITA Regionals, must wait to begin her tournament experience until Saturday, Oct. 25th, when the main draw starts. Seeded seventh as an automatic qualifier, Jaklin will face Xavier junior Lauren Clary in a first-round match.

The ITA Midwest Regionals are one of eight regional championships around the country that determine the competitors for the ITA National Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., from Nov. 6th-9th.

Gumuscu will return to action for her final qualifying contest tommorrow at 9:00 a.m.
