Des Moines, Iowa - After competing well in the first two days of action at the Drake Lloyd Stokstad Invitational, the University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team enjoyed a successful conclusion to its Iowa journey. Freshman Molly Smith highlighted the Flames' outing, winning the Flight D singles title, defeating Charlotte Ljungkrantz of Iowa State in a difficult battle, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6). Also, Nicole Derouin and Corey Steven persevered after a loss in their first doubles match to win the backdraw of Flight A doubles. The duo knocked off Kristina Olshanskaya and Lucie Ruskova of Missouri in the final, 8-5. Also leaving Iowa on a winning note was Zorica Malesevic who won the consolation of Flight C with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Suzanne Rutten of Iowa State. Derouin advanced to the final of the Flight A backdraw, but was thwarted, 6-4, 6-2, by Annali de Bruyn of Drake. Zvjezdana Malesevic, who has played excellent tennis thus far in the season, made it to the final of Flight B singles where she was defeated, 6-2, 6-2, by Rebecca Harvey of Nebraska.
