Evanston, Ill.- The UIC women's tennis team finished up a busy weekend at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday and Sunday with a couple of strong victories by the squad's gritty veteran.

Senior Ayca Gumuscu bounced back from a three-loss day on Friday to defeat Iowa State's Sabrina Evers, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, and Eastern Michigan's Ying Kansuthi, 6-3, 2-1 (ret.), in the backdraw of the first flight singles bracket.

The rest of the weekend was tough for the Flames. Sophomore Corey Steven lost consecutive 6-2, 6-2 second backdraw matches to DePaul's Petra Rehusova and Louisville's Julia Hierl, while also dropping a main draw battle to Western Michigan's Carrie Jeanmaire, 6-3, 6-3, in the second flight.

Iris Jaklin could not build on the momentum she had after Friday's tough win over Louisville's Michele Spiess, losing both a main draw match to Gergana Ganeva, 0-6, 6-1, 7-5, and a second backdraw bout versus Northwestern's Jamie Peisel, 6-2, 6-2.

The Flames go back to work on Friday, October 17th at the 2003 Lloyd Stokstad Invitational hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
