ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – In the final round on Sunday, junior Kathryn Sharples captured the Flight C singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 win, as the UIC women’s tennis team completed competition at the DePaul Invitational at Romeoville High School.

"DePaul always runs a great tournament," head coach Shannon Tully said.  "We had a lot of quality matches this weekend which helped us learn our strengths and weaknesses.  We have a tough fall schedule with Michigan State and Northwestern Invites coming up in the next two weeks, so we will take our experiences from this weekend and work hard to improve for the next tournaments."

On day one in singles, Haley Craig and Natalia Kuvakina advanced after defeating their respective opponents.  Craig took down Northern Illinois’ Nelle Youel, 6-0, 6-3, while Kuvakina finished out her match with Western Michigan’s Maggie Remynse, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (8).  Jana Knoppe (Flight B) and Sharples (Flight C) received first-round byes and automatically advanced to the next round, as Keti Mebuke dropped her match, 7-6 (6), 6-4, to Illinois State’s Carolina Abello and moved on to play in the consolation semifinal.

Doubles got underway with the pairings of Knoppe and Sharples in Flight A, as well as Craig and Kuvakina.  Knoppe and Sharples were able to come away with an 8-6 win over Western Michigan’s Nini Sujashvili and Remynse to advance to the quarterfinal round, but fell in an 8-6 match to Zsofia Kranczicki and Zsofia Lanstiak of Lewis University.  Craig and Kuvakina went on to the quarterfinals after defeating Illinois State’s Kadi Ilves and Stefanie Youngberg, 8-2.

Saturday presented the Flames with quarterfinal and semifinal action in singles.  In Flight A, Craig was challenged by Lanstiak in a three-set match before coming away with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7) victory.  She moved on to the semifinal round where she faced DePaul’s Matea Cutura, but ultimately went down 6-3, 6-4.  Kuvakina was unable to outlast Carolin Neumann of DePaul, as she fell 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.

Knoppe came away with her first singles win in Flight B, as she defeated Sujashvili, 6-0, 7-5, and advanced to the semifinals, where she took on DePaul’s Rebeca Mitrea before falling 6-1, 7-5.  She faced Illinois State’s Phyllis Tigges in the consolation round, where she captured a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Entering into Flight C singles, Sharples saw action against Youngberg and came out on top in a three-set 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (3) final.  Taking on Milwaukee’s Dana Shannon in the semis, Sharples ended the match in straight sets after going 6-4, 7-5, securing a spot in the finals.  Mebuke was able to advance in the consolation bracket, as she defeated Megan Barthels, 6-1, 6-1, of Valparaiso to move on to the consolation championship, but the match was not played.

Craig and Kuvakina made their final showing in doubles after they went up against Milwaukee’s Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi, falling 8-3.

On the final day of competition, Craig and Kuvakina went into consolation play but lost to their respective opponents, as Knoppe defeated her Flight B consolation opponent in Illinois State’s Phyllis Tigges, 6-3, 6-3.  Sharples came up big for UIC and took the Flight C Championship match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, over Abello.

In consolation doubles, Knoppe and Sharples dropped a pair of matches, while Craig and Kuvakina took an 8-2 decision over Chicago State’s Karyn Emeralda and Viviene Noel and an 8-6 win against Illinois State’s Emmie Marx and Tigges.
