Women's Tennis Wraps Up Bronco Invitational With Wins

Kalamzoo, Mich.- The University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team finished their opening tournament of the fall with a strong showing on Sunday, led by four singles wins and a doubles victory. Corey Steven and Christina Oum led the way with a singles and doubles victory apiece, while Iris Jaklin and Melanie Humphrey both looked strong in three-set singles wins. Steven downed Marquette's Francina Bonnelly 6-3, 6-3, while Oum defeated the Golden Eagles' Andrea Bukacek by a 6-0, 6-2 mark. The two also teamed up for a doubles win over Ball State's Jenny Batty and Jessica Thompson. Humphrey chalked up a win over Illinois' Macall Harkins in a 6-7, 6-4, 1-1 (15) comeback, while Jaklin rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (4) victory over Thompson. UIC finished the tourney 10-9 overall in singles play and a 4-4 doubles record. The Flames return to action next weekend at the DePaul Invitational in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
