Women's Tennis Completes Day One At Bronco Invitational|

Kalamazoo, Mich.- It was a strong opening performance for the University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team in their first day back in intercollegiate action at the Bronco Invitational at Western Michigan on Friday.
Junior Beatriz Cabrera led the team with two convincing singles victories in the Flight "A" main draw, downing Illinois' Momei Qu in two, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win, and defeating Western Michigan's Rattiya Hiranrat, 6-3, 6-2, in the next round.
Cabrera, who ranked 92nd in the nation in the recent ITA Preseason Rankings, will face Indiana's Dora Vastag on Saturday.
Fellow junior Iris Jaklin won her first match of the day, winning a 6-2, 6-3 contest over Ball State's Katie Owens before dropping a 6-1, 6-2 battle with Eastern Michigan's Victoria Domina in Flight "A" singles.
Melanie Humphrey chalked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marquette's Francina Bonnelly, then gave Ball State's Jessica Thompson all she could handle in a 6-2, 7-6 (4) loss.
Corey Steven was defeated by Illinois' Macall Harkins in a close 7-5, 6-3 match. In consolation play, Steven took on the Hoosiers' Dominika Walterova, losing a 6-3, 6-0 bout.
Christina Oum lost a 6-0, 6-0 match to Kara Zeder of Indiana, but the second-year player bounced back with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the consolation opener over Western Michigan's Pryanka Parekh.
In doubles action, Humphrey and Jaklin downed the Broncos' duo of Hiranrat and Carrie Jeanmarie with an 8-6 win, while Steven and Oum were defeated by Ball State's Jennifer Pollack and Stephanie Farrar, 8-3.
The Flames return to action tomorrow for the second day of play at the Bronco Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
