Indianapolis, Ind.- Despite a dreary weekend in Indianapolis, the University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team continued their reign over the Horizon League, defeating Butler 4-1 to earn the 2004 Horizon League Women's Tennis Championship at North Central High.

The win gives the Flames their eighth consecutive conference title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament for the sixth straight season.

"It feels great," said UIC Head Coach Shannon Tully of the historic victory. "I'm really excited. It is an accomplishment."

The Flames notched the doubles point with close wins from the duo of Iris Jaklin and Ayca Gumuscu and the team of Molly Smith and Melanie Humphrey. UIC dominated the rest of the way, taking three of four singles matches in two sets to secure the unprecedented crown.

Horizon League Player of the Year Beatriz Cabrera, All-Horizon League Second Team selection Corey Steven and Melanie Humphrey notched the championship-clinching singles wins.

"It is very rewarding to see four newcomers and four veterans take home the title," said Tully. "[The title match] was intense. The players put alot of heart in it. They did a great job."

The Flames learn their NCAA first-round location and opponent on Wednesday, May 5th between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. The announcement will be made on ESPNews and brackets will be posted immediately on www.ncaasports.com.
