Indianapolis, Ind.- Even inclement weather in the Indianapolis area couldn't prevent the UIC women's tennis team from moving one step closer to a ninth consecutive Horizon League crown, with the top-seeded Flames downing No. 8 UW-Milwaukee 4-0 in the opening round of the Horizon League Women's Tennis Championship tourney on Saturday afternoon. There was no stopping the UIC machine as the Flames quickly took the four points necessary to advance. All-Horizon League honorees Molly Smith, Corey Steven and Melanie Humphrey cinched the singles points, while the tandems of Iris Jaklin and Humphrey at No. 1 and Steven and Christina Oum at No. 2 took care of earning the doubles point. The rain forced the league to move the tournament from North Central High's outdoor complex to various indoor facilities across the Indianapolis area. The weather also forced tournament times to be moved back and the consolation bracket to be cancelled. UIC will face No. 5 Wright State, who advanced by way of a 4-0 victory over fourth-seeded Cleveland State, at Butler on Sunday at 9 a.m. The Horizon League finals, which would determine the league champion and the winner of the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, are scheduled for 7 p.m. at Carmel.
