Women's Tennis Captures 4-3 Win Over Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - After claiming the doubles point, the UIC women's tennis team (12-5, 4-1 HL) went on in singles to edge by Youngstown State and take a 4-3 conference win Friday at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Flames came away with the first point of the day after winning two-of-three doubles matches.  Haley Craig and Mariana Palacios tallied an 8-3 win at No. 1 against Marta Burak and Margarita Sadovnikova, while Natalia Kuvakina and Ann-Sophie Hahn came in at No. 3 to take out Annina Brendel and Tijana Raicevic, 8-4.

The final doubles match was close at No. 2, but Jana Knoppe and Kathryn Sharples ultimately fell to Paula de Man/Lauren Hankle, 9-8.

Heading into singles, UIC had to fend off the Penguins to take three wins and secure the victory.  Sharples took a quick 6-0, 6-1 win over Carolyn Jesko at No. 5 and Keti Mebuke also took a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 versus Brendel, while Knoppe came in at No. 4 with the deciding 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win against Hankle.

Palacios had a hard fought battle at No. 2, with her match going to three sets, but dropped a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 decision to Sadovnikova.  The other wins for Youngstown State came at No. 1, where de Man took down Craig, 6-2, 6-2, and at No. 3, with Kuvakina falling to Burak, 7-5, 6-0.

The Flames continue their stint in Ohio Saturday, as they get set to face Cleveland State at noon (CT) at the Chagrin Valley Athletic Club in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
