April 10, 2006
Chicago, Ill.- The UIC women's tennis team ran their Horizon League record to 6-0 in 2006 on Sunday, shutting out one of their top conference challengers with a 7-0 win over Butler at the UIC Outdoor Courts. UIC (9-10) captured the doubles point by taking two of the three paired matches. The Flames then overcame the Bulldogs in singles play with four impressive straight-set victories at the lower part of the order and two comeback wins in the top two slots. Corey Steven, Molly Smith, Grace Gill-Morlis and Christina Oum secured the win with four two-set wins. Iris Jaklin came back from a narrow 6-7(6) loss to Alaina Griffin at No. 1 singles by dominating the second set with a 6-0 victory, forcing a third set match tiebreaker. There Jaklin left no doubt, taking the deciding frame by a 10-1 score. Callan Smith rallied in similar fashion, falling in a close first set to Tayo Bailey before capturing the second set and the tiebreaker to earn the No. 2 singles win and give UIC a swepp of the day's action. The Flames close out the regular season at home next Saturday with matches against Horizon League foe Cleveland State and city rival DePaul at the UIC Outdoor Courts. The Flames take on the Vikings at 10:00 a.m., followed by a battle with the Blue Demons at 4:00 p.m.
