Women's Tennis Edged By DePaul

Chicago, Ill. - With playing conditions somewhere below perfect, the University of Illinois at Chicago and DePaul tangled in a women's tennis match that had fiery competition in freezing conditions. The Demons came out on top, beating the Flames, 4-3 at the UIC outdoor courts. With a bright sun and swirling cold winds, the two city rivals squared off with DePaul taking advantage after doubles play, winning the top two doubles matches. Alyson Stalzer and Karen Liwanpo won the third doubles match, 8-4. Nicole Derouin came from behind in the No.1 singles slot, beating Szilvia Kelemen, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Liwanpo and Zorica Malesevic were also winners in singles action, with Liwanpo winning the No.4 match and Malesevic at No.6 singles. DePaul took the No.5 and No.2 matches, setting up the No.3 match between UIC's Britta Dohmann and DePaul's Kadi Hilpus. Both played inspired tennis, battling through three sets with Hilpus finally winning the marathon match, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
The Flames will serve again this weekend when they travel to Detroit and Dayton to face Detroit, Cleveland State and Wright State in Horizon League action.
