MADISON, Wis. – The UIC women’s tennis team (2-9) dropped a 4-3 decision on Saturday to Wisconsin at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Despite their efforts, the Flames could not collect the extra point for the win, while senior Jana Knoppe, junior Keti Mebuke and freshman Veronica Lacerda each won their singles matches.

UIC was unable to take the early lead in doubles as it fell in each of its matches. Seniors Mariana Palacios and Kathryn Sharples teamed up for the first time this season, but went down to Lauren Chypyha and Lauren Burich, 8-3, at No. 1. Knoppe and senior Natalia Kuvakina also combined for the first time and suffered an 8-4 loss to Becca Bailey and Sydney Rider at No. 2, as Mebuke and Lacerda fell to Anastasia Tripolskay and Nova Patel, 8-1, at No. 3.

The Flames collected three wins in singles and made a push for the final point, but came up short in the end. Knoppe took her seventh straight win and 10th of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rider at No. 4. Lacerda additionally produced a straight-set win over Bailey, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6, while Mebuke won her match at No. 5 against Patel by default.

In UIC’s other matches, Palacios was defeated by Chypyha, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1, Sharples was edged by Burich, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 and Kuvakina fell to Tripolskay, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3.

The Flames will resume action on Thursday, March 20, when they host Valparaiso in their first conference match of the season beginning at noon CT.
