Chicago, Ill.- The UIC women's tennis team opened their Horizon League slate in outstanding fashion, defeating Butler 6-1 at the UIC Indoor Courts at Bally's in Hyde Park.

The Flames (4-4, 1-0 Horizon League) evened their overall record with an overall overwhelming performance, taking five of six singles matches while sweeping the doubles point with three 8-4 wins on the paired side.

Beatriz Cabrera, Corey Steven, Ayca Gumuscu, Iris Jaklin, and Molly Smith all posted a singles and doubles win on the day.

Freshman Christina Oum joined in on Smith's doubles victory, while Melanie Humphrey fought as hard as she could to keep UIC perfect on the day, barely dropping her No. 6 match to Annie Gantz, 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-4.

Gumuscu, fresh off being named Horizon League Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, turned in another strong win at the No. 2 spot, downing Alaina Griffin 6-3, 7-5.

Cabrera won once again at No. 1 singles, while Steven, Jaklin and Smith all closed out their victories with 6-3 second set wins.

The Flames return to action on March 6th to take on league rivals Wright State and Cleveland State in Dayton, Ohio.
