    GRIFFITH, Ind. – The UIC women’s tennis team (2-7) came out victorious in its meet on Friday against Grand Canyon at Match Point Tennis, as it collected a 4-3 win. After winning the doubles point, the Flames tallied three wins in singles by senior Jana Knoppe, junior Keti Mebuke and freshman Veronica Lacerda.

    The first point of the day went to UIC after seniors Mariana Palacios and Natalia Kuvakina defeated Priscilla Annoual and Tatum Prudhomme, 8-6, at No. 1 and senior Kathryn Sharples and Knoppe took an 8-4 win against Janaki Gunuganti and Frederique Van de Velde at No. 2. Mebuke and Lacerda’s match at No. 3 went unfinished after the point was decided.

    The Flames were then able to produced three wins in singles to clinch the win over the Antelopes. Knoppe won her fifth-straight singles match after taking down Van de Velde, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4, while Mebuke came back in her third set to best Silvia Tumova, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5, at No. 5 and Lacerda rounded out at No. 6 with a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 win against Raquel Gonzales.

    Sharples took her match at No. 3 against Gunuganti to three sets but ultimately fell 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (3). Palacios fell to Annoual, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1, as Kuvakina was retired in her match at No. 2 by Prudhomme.

    UIC is back at Match Point Tennis on Sunday to face Illinois State in a non-conference match at noon CT.
