Evergreen Park, Ill.- After coming up a point short in three of their last four non-conference matches, the University of Illinois at Chicago women's tennis team put together one of their finest efforts of the season on Sunday in defeating Xavier, 5-2, at the Evergreen Racquet and Fitness Club.

UIC (2-4) rebounded quickly from a close 4-3 loss to Bowling Green on Saturday with a second consecutive day of outstanding doubles play. The Flames took the early 1-0 lead on the Musketeers (5-2) thanks to doubles wins by the duos of Corey Steven and Christina Oum and Grace Gill-Morlis and Molly Smith.

Oum and Steven teamed up to down Kristen Clary and Annie Diedalis by an 8-4 count, while Smith and Gill-Morlis posted an 8-3 victory over Jackie Vilines and Kate Lohner.

Like Saturday, even in defeat UIC was crisp. Iris Jaklin and Melanie Humphrey were in the hunt for a UIC doubles sweep, but the combo fell just short in a 9-7 loss to Lauren Clary and Stephanie Bauer.

UIC head coach Shannon Tully said her team had been working on improving their doubles performance, and it showed this weekend with a 2-0 team record and a 4-2 overall mark on the doubles side.

"It's the best doubles I've ever seen here at UIC," said Tully, who knows what great doubles play looks like after taking the Flames to three straight Horizon League titles and three NCAA berths during her three-plus years at the helm.

The Flames put one of the Atlantic 10's finest programs away with an impressive singles showing, particularly from the end of the lineup. UIC swept their matches from the No. 3 through the No. 6 slots, all in convincing two-set scores.

Humphrey earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bauer, while Smith won her third consecutive match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Vilines.

Oum turned in one of the best showings of her young collegiate career by taking a quick 6-3, 6-2 win over Diedalis, while Gill-Morlis won her second singles match of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alicia Papa.

UIC takes on Illinois State next Saturday at the Evergreen Racquet and Fitnees Club at 3 p.m.
