Bowling Green Edges Women's Tennis, 4-3|
Feb. 13, 2005
Evergreen Park, Ill.- The UIC women's tennis team continued to play well during a grueling non-conference slate on Saturday, but even one of the best doubles showings during UIC head coach Shannon Tully's tenure couldn't hold off Bowling Green as the Falcons squeaked out a 4-3 victory at the Evergreen Racquet & Fitness Club.
UIC (1-4) battled hard the entire way, taking the early lead thanks to doubles wins by the pair of Iris Jaklin and Melanie Humphrey and the duo of Corey Steven and Christina Oum. Jaklin and Humphrey grabbed an 8-0 win over Susie Schoenberger and Heidi Romer, while Steven and Oum downed Ashley Jakupcin and Jenna Nussbaum in an 8-3 victory.
Even in a doubles defeat the Flames looked good, as Molly Smith and Grace Gill-Morlis continued to shine as a team in a narrow 8-6 loss to Andrea Volla and Andrea Meister.
On the singles side, Smith rebounded from a first-set loss to take the final two against Nussbaum in a thrilling 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) win for the reigning Horizon League Athlete of the Week.
Gill-Morlis continued to shine during her rookie campaign, as the freshman grabbed a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Cameron Benjamin.
Jaklin was close to securing an upset team win at No. 1 singles, coming back from a 2-6 loss to Schoenberger in the first set to take the second frame with a 7-5 score. An nagging Achilles injury hindered Jaklin the rest of the way, and despite a 4-1 lead in the third set the junior was unable to pul out the win after Schoenberger forced a tiebreaker.
The win was the third in a row for the Falcons (6-1).
UIC gets back at it on Sunday against Xavier at the Evergreen Racquet and Fitness Club at 9 a.m.
