Northern Iowa Show Women's Tennis Its Better Late Than Never
Feb. 9, 2001 Oak Park, Ill. - Despite Northern Iowa showing up to Friday's match almost an hour late and being penalized by starting down 4-0 in every singles match, UNI rallied back to down the UIC women's tennis team 4-3 at the Oak Park Tennis and Fitness Club. Northern Iowa was able to rally back in four of the six singles affairs with three going to a three-set 10-point tiebreaker. For UIC, Alyson Stalzer posted her third straight singles win while freshman Ayca Gumuscu tallied her first singles win of the spring season with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Amie Crowley at the No. 3 position. The Flames did take the doubles point as the tandem of Nicole Derouin and Karen Liwanpo defeated Kylene Wong and Crowley, 9-8 (10-2) in the No. 2 doubles' match while the duo of Stalzer and Zvjezdana Malesevic won after Fleur Muysson and Carrie Amsbaugh retired with the contest tied 1-1. With the loss, UIC falls to 2-3 on the year while Northern Iowa improved to 2-3 with the win. The Flames are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they battle Alabama at Northerwestern's Indoor Tennis Facility.
