Women's Tennis Suffers 4-3 Loss against Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – The UIC women’s tennis team (1-4) came up short on Saturday afternoon as it fell to Toledo, 4-3, at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club. Seniors Kathryn Sharples, Jana Knoppe and junior Keti Mebuke collected wins for the Flames in their respective singles matches.

The Rockets picked up the first point of the day in doubles. The duo of Sharples and Knoppe fell to Katelyn Nguyen and Pia Rygh, 6-1, at No. 2, as Mebuke and freshman Veronica Lacerda dropped a 6-0 decision to Lauren Thai and Mackenzie Bowman at No. 3. Mariana Palacios and Natalia Kuvakina had their match at No. 1 go unfinished.

UIC picked up three wins in singles with Toledo taking three as well. Sharples recorded a three-set 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 victory over Rygh at No. 3, Knoppe picked up a 6-7, 7-6, 11-9 win at No. 4 against Emily Mazzola and Mebuke posted a straight-set 6-4, 7-5 victory versus Bowman at No. 5.

Palacios came up short against Chrissy Coffman, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 1, with Kuvakina falling to Nguyen, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2. In the No. 6 slot, Lacerda went down, 6-1, 6-2, to Pitt.

The Flames are back on the courts on Sunday when they compete against Bowling Green at Perrysburg Tennis Center in Perrysburg, Ohio, at 8:30 a.m.
