Women's Tennis Edged At Marquette, 4-3

Milwaukee, Wis.- Strong singles showings by Iris Jaklin, Molly Smith and Grace Gill-Morlis were not enough as the UIC women's tennis team was edged by Marquette, 4-3, at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium in Milwaukee. UIC (1-1) fell behind early thanks to a narrow doubles point loss. Smith and Gill-Morlis chalked up an 8-4 win over Katie Donovan and Eric Watkins, and Jaklin and Melanie Humphrey were close to helping the Flames take the point, but the duo was downed in a 9-8 affair versus Maria Calbeto and Callan Smith. Jaklin and Callan Smith went toe-to-toe at the top singles spot, with Jaklin prevailing in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Molly Smith looked strong at the No. 4 spot, winning 7-5, 6-1 over Elsemieke Dokter, while Gill-Morlis ran her collegiate dual match record to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Donovan. UIC returns to action this Saturday at Western Michigan beginning at 1 p.m.
