Des Moines, Iowa- The UIC women's tennis team bounced back in a big way from their disappointing season-opening loss to Marquette last week, sweeping every match against Drake to earn a 7-0 victory from the Bulldogs at the 7 Flags Racquet Center in Des Moines on Friday night.

The Flames (1-1) were led by gutsy performances from newcomers Beatriz Cabrera and Iris Jaklin at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Cabrera, a transfer from Virginia Commonwealth, needed three long sets to put away Drake's Annali de Bruyn, 6-4, 3-6, 19-17.

Jaklin, a transfer from Texas Christian, went into overtime with Zorana Stefanovic before taking the match 6-4, 4-6, 12-10.

Sophomore Corey Steven ran her spring record to 2-0 by downing Eveline Rusdianto, 7-5, 7-4, while senior Ayca Gumuscu won her No. 3 singles battle with Rebekah Thomas 6-3, 6-3.

Molly Smith and Melanie Humphrey took their singles matches to give UIC a sweep of the singles slate.

UIC swept all three doubles matches from Drake (0-3) to earn the doubles point.

The Flames return to action today against Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb.
