Shorthanded Women's Tennis Falls To Colorado State
Jan. 29, 2006
Lincoln, Neb.- Playing without usual No. 1 singles player Iris Jaklin due to illness, the UIC women's tennis team was unable to mount an offense against a tough Colorado State squad in a 7-0 loss on Saturday morning. UIC (0-1) fell behind early in double play and had to drop the No. 6 singles slot with only five players available. Jaklin and Melanie Humphrey (shoulder) were held out of the season opener. Senior Molly Smith was narrowly edged in her No. 3 singles match, taking Lauren Strasburger to three sets before falling in the tiebreaker. Smith teamed with younger sister Callan Smith to put up a strong fight in No. 2 doubles before narrowly falling 8-6 to Strasburger and Jasmin Singh. The Flames return to action against Nebraska on Sunday morning.
