Women's Tennis Falls to Marquette, 5-2, in Season Opener

MILWAUKEE – The UIC women’s tennis team concluded its first match of the regular season on Saturday at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium, where it dropped a 5-2 decision to Marquette. Senior Jana Knoppe and junior Keti Mebuke came away wins for the Flames in their respective singles matches.

Beginning with doubles, the Golden Eagles picked up wins at all three positions to take the first point of the day. Mariana Palacios and Ann-Sophie Hahn teamed up at No. 1, where they fell to Ali Dawson and Laia Hernandez Soler, 6-2. At No. 2, Knoppe and Kathryn Sharples suffered a 6-1 loss to Erin Gebes and Rocio Diaz, while Natalia Kuvakina and Veronica Lacerda were taken down by Ana Pimienta and Vanessa Foltinger, 6-2, at No. 3.

UIC tried to bounce back in singles and was able to come away with two victories. Knoppe tallied a 7-6, 2-6, 10-6 win over Foltinger at No. 5, as Mebuke defeated Diaz, 6-7, 7-6, 10-5, at No. 6.

Kuvakina made a strong effort at No. 2 versus Gebes before falling 6-0, 3-6, 10-1. At No. 4, Hahn put up a fight in her match against Dawson and took her second set to the tiebreaker but lost 6-1, 7-6 (1-0).

Marquette’s two additional victories came when Pimienta ousted Palacios, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 and Hernandez Soler collected a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sharples at No. 3.

The Flames will turn around and head to Urbana, Ill., where they will take on Illinois at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the Atkins Tennis Center.
