CHICAGO – Women’s tennis player Kathryn Sharples has been selected as the UICFlames.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period of April 22-28 as announced by the athletic department on Wednesday morning. Sharples delivered the finishing blow to defeat Youngstown State at the 2013 Horizon League Women’s Tennis Championships this past Sunday as UIC notched its 17th consecutive conference title.
Sharples won her first set against YSU’s Annina Brendel at No. 5 before dropping the second. At that point all of the attention was focused on Sharples and Brendel as the fate of the championship rested in their outcome. The Stewkley, England, native ultimately answered the call, claiming the win 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-4.
"With being the last match on the court, I was nervous but I knew it was a chance to step up and win it for the team," Sharples said. "I had all my teammates next to me on the court and I kept looking at them and they kept pumping me up. They made me realize that I wanted to win so much for the team, and not just because I wanted to win personally. It felt like there were seven of us on the court and not just me, so it was great to clinch the match."
Sharples and her teammates will now compete in the NCAA Tournament and travel to first-round opponent No. 15 Northwestern on Friday at 2 p.m. CT.
