CHICAGO – The UIC men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams head into a pair of dual meets this weekend. On Friday, the Flames take on Northwestern, with the men additionally facing Western Kentucky, at the Norris Aquatics Center in Evanston, Ill. at 4 p.m. (CT), then turn around to compete against the Panthers in Milwaukee in a Horizon League match-up on Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) at the Klotsche Natatorium.
“We are looking forward to the tough competition this weekend,” head coach Paul Moniak said. “Facing a Big Ten team in their pool, as well as the defending Horizon League champion on the road, will give us a true indication of our progress this season thus far.”
The Flames have put up strong performances so far this season, with their most recent coming on Oct. 27 against Eastern Illinois. The men’s squad captured a 165-67 win, as the women established a final of 140-92 to claim their 10th victory against the Panthers in as many seasons.
The men’s squad (2-0, 1-0 HL) was able to produce best times in all 13 events and outlast EIU. Rodolfo Zuniga (200 free, 500 free), Christian Grobe (400 IM, 100 breast), Mike Greco (1 mtr, 3 mtr), Ryota Kuwahara (1000 free), Joel Demuth (50 free), Vince Errichiello (100 fly), Mike Reed (100 free) and Sebastian Ostrowski (100 back) came away with top times in their respective events.
UIC went one, two, three in the 400 medley relay, with the team of Peter Errichiello, Grobe, Ostrowski and Reed taking the win in 3:32.33. In the 400 free relay, Demuth, John Mordach, Brian Sivak and Ramiro Almaraz held the best time with 3:10.95.
Melanie Waszak (1000 free, 100 back), Veronica Gibson (400 IM, 100 fly) and Whitney Johnson (1 mtr, 3 mtr) took a pair of firsts for the women’s squad (2-0, 1-0 HL), with Emily Gniatczyk (50 free), Katherine Hare (100 free) and Monica Pinkus (100 breast) taking one apiece.
The team of Anne Jacobsen, Pinkus, Danel Voorhees and Devon O’Neil claimed first in the 400 medley relay with 3:57.65, as O’Neil, Waszak, Jacobsen and Kirsten Hutchinson had the best time in the 400 free relay with 3:39.64.
Heading into this weekend’s competition, Northwestern’s men’s team is 0-1 after suffering a 157-141 loss to Eastern Michigan, while the women at 1-0 after defeating Illinois, 169-131. Western Kentucky is 1-0 with a 168-124 win over Delta State. Milwaukee’s men’s and women’s squads are 2-1 on the season, with a meet scheduled for Friday evening with Wheaton College, and 1-0 in the Horizon League after wins against Wright State.
In previous meets with the Flames, the Wildcats have overcome UIC in the past five seasons, as the Hilltoppers hold a 2-0 all-time advantage over the men’s team. Over the past 10 seasons when competing against the Panthers, the men’s squad has gone 6-3-1, while the women have been unable to capture a win.
