Flames Dominated Eastern Illinois in Home Opener

The UIC swimming and diving team downed Eastern Illinois as the Flames kicked off their 2010-11 home season. The women claimed victory by a final tally of 153-52, while the men won by score of 143-71.
"Now that we are two weeks into the dual-meet season, we're happy with how we have been competing, said Head Coach Paul Moniak. We're getting our races down, getting our splits and strategy down, so overall it was a very good day for us."
UIC began the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relays and did not look back. The Flames won all 26 of the meet's events, producing numerous first-place finishers.
Earning first-place honors for the men included Dan Corley, Zach Van Swol, Joel Demuth, Andrew Schmitt, Mike Greco, Steve Yemm, Colin Stuart, Woody Lord and Evan Dunn. Van Swol and Schmitt earned two-first-place finishes each.
Van Swol started off by winning the 200 free in a time of 1:42.96 and then took down the 100 back, touching the wall at 53.14.
Schmitt picked up wins in the 200 IM and the 100 fly in times of 1:56.54 and 50.70, respectively.
Event winners of the women's side included Emily Hare, Emily Gniatcyzk, Monica Pinkus, Melanie Waszak, Laurel Heath, Brooke Sawyer, Alex Farrar and Sarah Walsh. Gniatcyzk, Waszak and Heath garnered multiple top times each.
Gniatcyzk began the meet by winning the 200 free in a time of 1:55.72 and then claimed the 100 free in a time of 53.05.
Waszak owned the 200 IM and the 500 free with top times of 2:11.49 and 5:11.71.
Heath won both diving competitions as she scored 220.88 off the one-meter board and 234.68 from the three-meter height.
The Flames capped of the meet by winning both heats of the 200 free relay.
UIC travels to Northwestern next Saturday to compete in a four-way meet with the Wildcats, North Dakota and conference-foe Milwaukee.
