CHICAGO – The UIC men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams welcome Eastern Illinois in their first home meet of the season on Saturday.  Competition is set to get underway at 1 p.m. (CT) at the Flames Natatorium.

The Flames return to the pool after defeating Wright State in 176-122 finals on Oct. 13.  The men and women combined for 24 best times out of 32 events, with eight coming from a collection of newcomers.

The men’s squad (1-0, 1-0 HL) put up strong performances to capture 11 first-place finishes.  Rodolfo Zuniga (1000 free), Brian Sivak (100 back), Kei Ishimaru (200 fly, 100 fly), Mike Reed (50 free), Joel Demuth (100 free), Christian Grobe (200 breast) and Ramiro Almaraz (200 IM) all came away with top times in their respective events, with the 200 free relay team also taking first in 1:25.25.

Woody Lord and Mike Greco split in the one- and three-meter dives.  Lord took first in the 1 mtr with 317.40, an NCAA qualifying standard, and second in the 3 mtr with 279.30, while Greco took second in the 1 mtr with 278.78 and first in the 3 mtr with 285.00.

Four members of the women’s squad (1-0, 1-0 HL) were able to come away with two individual wins apiece.  Veronica Gibson (1000 free, 200 fly), Melanie Waszak (200 free, 100 fly), Andrea Longlade (100 breast, 200 breast) and Monica Pinkus (50 free, 100 free) all put up pairs of firsts, while Anne Jacobsen (100 back), Whitney Johnson (one-meter dive) and Kelsey Millin (200 IM) also captured firsts.

Additionally, Johnson received the honor of Horizon League Diver of the Week for her first- and third-place finishes in the one-meter (226.13) and three-meter (215.25) dives, respectively.

Heading into Saturday’s competition, the Flames have defeated the Panthers the past nine seasons on the men’s and women’s side, including last year’s win of 122-76 by the men and 137-60 by the women.  Eastern Illinois’ men’s squad is coming off of a 112-88 loss to IUPUI, while the women’s squad is split at 1-1 after defeating Butler, 59-36, and falling to IUPUI, 64-31.
