CHICAGO - After holding its annual Blue vs. Red Intrasquad Meet on Sept. 28, the UIC men's and women's swimming & diving teams get set for the regular season on Saturday, when they take on Horizon League-opponent Wright State.  Competition gets underway at 11 a.m. (CT) at the UIC Natatorium.

Saturday marks the sixth-consecutive season where the Flames have opened their regular season against the Raiders.  The men's squad has defeated Wright State in three consecutive meetings, including last season's 176-122 victory, as the women defeated the Raiders in back-to-back meetings, coming away with a 176-122 win.

"We always look forward to a close battle with a Horizon League foe in the early season," head coach Paul Moniak said.  "We've been training for 5-6 weeks and the team is excited to finally race."

The swimming & diving teams were split in two on Sept. 28, when the Blue vs. Red Meet took place.  The current athletes were joined by select alumni to participate in the annual event, where the Blue team took the win over Red.  After combining to win 10-of-22 events, the Blue squad produced a total of 188 points to outscore the Red team's 170.

Looking ahead toward the rest of the season, UIC is set to face a collection of tough and challenging opponents, while being led by captains Melanie Waszak, Alisa Penkala, and Anne Jacobsen for the women, and Woody Lord, Brian Sivak and Josh Jacobson for the men.

Wright State is the first-of-six Horizon League opponents the Flames face this season, with the women additionally taking on Youngstown State.  UIC also competes in four non-conference meets, as well as the TYR Invitational and UIC Diving Invitational.

"Both the men's and women's teams have a good combination of valuable returning athletes and a solid freshman class," Moniak added.  "We feel our regular season schedule will prepare our team well for the Horizon League Championships."
