    As the 2010-2011 academic year approaches, UIC takes a look back at the previous year in athletics.

    CHICAGOThe UIC women's swimming and diving team made a strong push at the Horizon League Championships finishing fourth.

    The Flames finished the year with top times in four events in the Horizon League, including: 400-yard medley, 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle.

    Emily Gniatczyk started her collegiate career with a win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.64) and second place in the 50-yard freesyle (52.64) against Wright State. She claimed the school record in the 200 freestyle with a first place finish at home (1:53.42). The freshman took first place at Northwestern in the 100 freestyle (52.34), she won the 50 freestyle (24.58) and 100 freestyle (53.33) against Western Illinois, finished in first place in the 100 free (52.80) and runner-up in the 50 freestyle (24.58) at Green Bay. Gniatczyk claimed the top spot in the 50 freestyle (24.37) and 100 fly (59.82) against Valparaiso. She was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle (23.53) and third place finishes in the 100 freestyle (51.34) and 200 freestyle (1:50.96). After an impressive start to her career, Gniatczyk earned All-Horizon League Newcomer of the Year.

    At the Horizon League Championship Kayla Redig took first in the 100 butterfly (55.65) and 200 butterfly (2:01.35) setting a new school record in the process.

    In the Flames win over Valparaiso the swimming and diving teams took first in twenty events. The Flames won 143-76. UIC's multi-event winners were McKinzie Jacobs (1650-yard freestyle and 200 freestyle) and Gniatczyk. Other winners on the day were Clair Martin (200-yard IM), Alexandra Farrar (100-yard backstroke), Hannika Schleebs (100 freestyle).

     

     

    The Flames also had a win over in state rival Western Illinois 178-78, winning twenty-two events (men and women). Senior Shaina Israel took home first in the 1000-yard freestyle and Sarah Walsh finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke.

    UIC dives into the pool to start its 2010-2011 campaign Oct. 23 at Wright State.
