CHICAGO - In preparation for his upcoming junior campaign, UIC swimming and diving school record holder Steve Yemm qualified for the 2009 US Open this past weekend in the 100 meter butterfly while competing at the Midwestern sectional of the Speedo Championship Series in Minneapolis.

The Sterling, Ill. native placed second in the consolation final with a 55.57 second showing. His time was the fourth fastest out of the 24-man field while competing for his hometown club team, the Stingrays.

Yemm capped off an outstanding sophomore season that saw the men's swimming and diving team claim the 2009 Horizon League Championship in February.

As an individual, Yemm won the 100 back and the 200 fly at the championships, with the latter in a school and league record setting time. He was a member of the victorious 400 free relay team that achieved the NCAA `B' cut time at the championships and is also a part of every school record relay team as all new records were set last season.

The US Open will be held in Federal Way, Washington August 4-8. Results can be found on the USA swimming site at usaswimming.org.

"Historically, the US Open time standards are very close to the Olympic Trail qualifying times," said Flames head coach Paul Moniak. "This is a substantial accomplishment."
